Subject: Re: Carpet in NMR Labs

We put an NMR in an unused -- and carpeted -- office and ended up
tearing out the carpet because our data was junk from all the static
electricity. It wasn't so bad in the summer when the humidity was high,
but in the winter our data was unusable. We also had carpet in a GC
lab, and you can only imagine what effect all the static had on our
ECD's. We went to bare, painted concrete and everyone was much happier.

  Subject: carpet in NMR labs

Anyone have experience with carpet being installed in an NMR lab? If
so,
could you please summarize the pros and cons you've experienced with
this set up. We have a new Science bldg coming on line and several
faculty members are requesting carpet tile in the NMR space. They
state
advantages include aesthetics, noise reduction, and small expensive
sample tubes don't usually break if dropped. My primary concerns
include
carpet damage from rolling large liquid N2 dewars around, spills and
clean up of contamination, as well as safe procedures for maintenance
workers using equipment (vacuums, etc) to clean and maintain the
space.

Any feedback would be most appreciated.

  Thanks

  Brent
