Why should anyone have to "navigate" by themselves during such an emergency?  Did they make the decision to work alone?  Where they allowed to be in a hazardous area totally alone?  What does prudent practice suggest?  I have my answers to these questions.  What are yours?

Not to be too much of curmudgeon (Jay has a lock on that title!) and
(really) not seeking to prolong this thread.....

But what is "normal walking pace" when someone has goop in their eyes 
and
they're trying to navigate through the lab to the EW/SS?
