We are a small, private, liberal arts college with ~1000 students. I'm interested in other similar education institutions policies on unsupervised access of maintenance personnel, housekeeping and public safety officers (not police officers) to areas of chemical storage and chemical preparation and the training you require for 1) unsupervised access if allowed; 2) supervised access; 3) unforeseen emergencies (after hours) whether or not access is allowed. Having recently informed the director of the physical plant that we (the department) required chemical safety training for anyone with access to these areas, I have been asked to basically train the entire physical plant. I don't feel all of these people should have unsupervised access. It's not possible to train these people to the same level that we require of students before they have unsupervised access to these areas (two years of coursework and one year of employment/research with supervised access). What are your thoughts? Thank you.
