Can someone help me here?  We are requiring that all students and
faculty wear safety goggles in the chemistry labs.  This came from one
of the chemistry faculty this morning.

Can someone explain to me why laboratory safety glasses aren't allowed?
  I was not aware that we were making this kind of distinction between
safety glasses and goggles.  I've already told many of my students that
goggles or some types of safety glasses (upon my inspection of the
length of the eye shields) are appropriate for lab.  It is true that the
goggles provide the best protection because they form a seal around the
entire eye,  but many types of safety glasses (standard lab safety
glasses) are face fitting with eye shields of the appropriate lengths at
the top and sides and can be used. Why do we restrict our protective lab
eyewear to only goggles?
