Thanks. - Ralph Subject: RE: CHEMICAL HEALTH AND SAFETY has been updated on ChemWeb.com Date: Thu, 8 May 2003 11:41:29 -0500 From: "Prisby, Mary"I would like to get some assistance with a project I am working on. I am currently evaluating our fume hood operating conditions to maintain a safe work environment but reduce energy consumption. I am sure we have all been in a situation of evaluating cost reduction without impacting safety. IH monitoring has been completed periodically and the results have come back as nondetect. Projects are not consistent. The work consists of small scale chemical synthesis work to 200 liter reactors. Our current face velocities are at 100 fpm. The fume hoods do have a set back at 60fpm. I am putting together data to support reducing the face velocities down to 80 or 90 fpm to lower energy cost. Of course I would complete additional IH monitoring. I would like to see if other companies or institutions have completed similar activities. I am also interested in any reference material that discusses energy consumption. I am currently using the specs from the fume hood manufacturer, Industrial Ventilation Manual and have requested Ventilation for Control of the Work Environment among other sources. As an fyi, in addition to using fume hoods, safety evaluations may recommend use of a respirator as additional protection when handling highly toxic materials. Thanks, Mary
